The RepRap project aims to produce a free and open source hardware (FOSH) 3D printer, whose full specifications are released under the GNU General Public License, and which is capable of replicating itself by printing many of its own (plastic) parts to create more machines. [13] [14] RepRaps have already been shown to be able to print circuit boards [15] and metal parts. [16] [17] Fab@Home is the other opensource hardware project for DIY 3D printers. The fact that, unusually for a former company, we will be able to leave megabytes of useful information available to everyone in perpetuity is due in part to the support from those people.

Michael Turner, the art director behind 20th Century Fox’s The Wolverine starring Hugh Jackman, spoke about the growing role of 3D printing during the local launch of the Blu-Ray edition of the film. 3D printing was used to create certain props in The Wolverine, such as the armour for the Silver Samurai character. “3D printing was great for that character because of the small pieces that made up the armour, and we even created swords with the printers,” Turner said. “It’s very fast with the modelling on the computer, so you get a real thing pretty quickly once it is designed.” Currently working on a different film, Turner said that the design team is considering getting a 3D printer into the art department in order to build the sets as models with the printer. “With the 3D printer, we have the opportunity to create buildings quickly instead of making them out of cardboard,” he said.

The Bamboo Bicycle Club is already helping people build their own eco-friendly bamboo bike frames, through both hands-on workshops and home building kits, but the next step in the DIY revolution from this organization might be to enable people to 3D-print the crucial components at home.
